Most of the fundamental ideas of science are essentially simple, and may, as a rule, be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone.

Overview of Training Program

The New Science of Fixing Things offer blended learning designed for engineers with responsibility for process performance, product performance and reliability, who have too much to do and too little time to do it in. The material is also for professional problem solvers such as Six Sigma Master Black Belts who would like to learn how to be the best in the business.

Classes and Workshops are run by founders David Hartshorne and John Allen. These fast-paced seminars teach the lessons they have learned in their careers as professional problem solvers working on planes, trains and automobiles, and everything in between! The seminars will excite engineers and technical people, as well as Engineering and Quality directors as they delve into the principles of good strategy, tactics and sound technical models to fix things…fast. The material is supported by real-life case examples and includes both exercises and workshops for the participant. There are three elements to the TNSFT blended learning program:

The Analytic Logic Map shows how all problems are solved based on causal explanation. The seminars teach the tactical implementation of the Topographic Diagnostic strategy. Diagnosis is the process of deriving causal explanation from behavior in terms of function and structure, and is the inverse of simulation. Click here for a full explanation.

Diagnostic Tools (d-TOOLS) provides self-paced learning in approximately six hours online, delivered in short chapters to maintain interest and optimize learning. By teaching this material online, we are limiting the use of expensive classroom time for training in tactical development and execution.
Self-paced online learning has several distinct advantages over the classroom:

  • Consistent and professional delivery
  • Student testing, monitoring, and college credit in some cases
  • Translation to other languages, while maintaining consistent delivery

And not the least of which is the efficiency and cost: about 25% of the cost of the classroom. Two hours of high quality self-paced training can replace eight hours of classroom time, leaving the classroom for tactical discussions and development.

Convergent Diagnostics for Variation Reduction (CDVR) is a three-day class all about the best tactics for tracking down sources of variation in manufacturing, and finding and removing the causes of well-hidden chronic problems. The tactics are built on the years of practice that have earned David and John reputations as great problem solvers. Participants are able to attend public CDVR events, and they are delivered at client premises. CDVR has also been tailored for corporations who wish to maximize case relevance and deliver it using their own trainers.

How Stuff Really Works (HSRW) is the lab-based class for product performance and reliability improvement, where we teach participants how to rapidly decompose and understand machine behavior. Classes are divided into teams of three, and each team provided with mechanical and electromechanical devices to test plus software and instrumentation for data acquisition. The class, taught by TNSFT over the course of four days, is limited to 24 attendees. Participants are able to attend public HSRW events, and they are delivered at client premises.
